In the Bakumatsu times (the late Edo period), Shungaku Matsudaira, the lord of Fukui clan, ordered Kosei Yuri the safe keeper to build a Echizen Kura Yashiki, a treasury store house in Nagasaki and to export soy sauce and raw silk through the Dutch trading house from Dejima island in Nagasaki to Europe in order to rebuild the finance of Fukui Clan.
The total amount of exports reached 3 million ryo (approximately 30 trillion yen worth of gold), which is said to have been transported from Nagasaki to Fukui by 125 horses with 2 boxes of sen-ryo-bako (a box to store 1,000 ryo) on the back of each horse.
In those days, Muroji was the biggest soy sauce store in Fukui Clan and produced almost all the soy sauce exported, which contributed a great deal to fiscal reconstruction of Fukui Clan.
In July 1863, Ryoma Sakamoto borrowed 5,000 ryo from Fukui Clan, which profited from the export trade, in order to construct “Naval Training Center” in Kobe.
In October 1867, Ryoma Sakamoto revisited Fukui on purpose of recruitint Kosei Yuri to serve as a minister of the new government.
They talked with each other about building a brand new Japan at Tabakoya, a Japanese-style hotel. It is said that, then, Ryoma was in high spirits, exclaiming “You know! I’m surprised at the soy sauce of Muroji. How delicious!”
Our soy sauce was loved in the world as well as by a historic hero, Ryoma Sakamoto.
With our product “Ryoma”, you can enjoy the same taste as Ryoma savored.
It keeps the taste of the soy sauce made in those days without artificial additives. That is, natural taste, Umami taste and rich aroma which you will surely love are naturally produced by the action of koji mold during a long fermentation process.
